DocuScience: When we cycle

The film When We Cycle, by Arne Gielen and Gertjan Hulster, is the sequel to Why We Cycle (2017) and Together We Cycle (2022). Whereas the first two documentaries explored Dutch cycling culture and its impact, this third focuses on the future: will cycling remain natural? The film explores how social trends affect cycling infrastructure and urban mobility, based on interviews with experts and cyclists.

When We Cycle raises the question of how Wageningen can continue to develop as a bicycle-friendly city in the future.

About When We Cycle

The film When we cycle, by creators Arne Gielen and Gertjan Hulster, is a sequel to the cycling documentaries Why we cycle (2017) and Together we cycle (2022). The first two documentaries dealt with the development of cycling culture in the Netherlands and the impact of cycling on society. Why do we cycle in the first place? In When we cycle, the central question is whether Dutch cycling culture remains a given. In this third part, the creators explore what the future will bring. The central theme is how different social trends may influence cycling and the design of cities. Through interviews with experts and everyday cyclists, the documentary explores various future scenarios for cycling and urban mobility.

What is the state of cycling culture in Wageningen? wonders Erna Maters after watching the documentaries. She is involved in WUR's mobility policy as sustainability policy officer at the Facility Management Department. On Wageningen Campus, cycling is prominent, with ‘strings’ of cyclists and (over)full bike racks during the week. Many WUR employees also cycle to work, some even cycling from Ede-Wageningen station after a train ride. Yet you also see many cars on campus, especially on rainy Tuesdays and Thursdays.
